Rabi al-Awwal Around the World

Rabi al-Awwal Around the World

In the Islamic Calendar, the two most important months of the lunar year are Ramadan and Dhu al-Hijjah – the month of the Hajj pilgrimage. However, there is one other month that is just as important; Rabi al-Awwal. Currently, we are now in the middle of the month, but there is one main reason as to why this month is so important is that it is the month in which Muhammad (PBUH) was born.

Because of how important this month is, Muslims around the world celebrate Rabi al-Awwal in different ways. As such, we will look into the different ways that Muslims celebrate Rabi al-Awwal around the world.

Areas in and Around Pakistan

This area of the world is renowned in the Islamic community for large, eccentric celebrations within their local area. During the month of Rabi al-Awwal, people across the region have a gathering in which they praise a particular person known as a Mehfil e-Naat. Due to the month, the Mehfil-e-Naat is used to commemorate and praise the life of Muhammad.

As well as this, the local people tend to hold celebrations where they have lots of food, praise, and where people come together to celebrate Islam and the birth of its most important Prophet.

In the Middle East

In this part of the world, they celebrate the life of Muhammad and what he achieved within his lifetime. With this in mind, people within various communities get together and praise the life of Muhammad. This is generally achieved by discussing the stories and ideologies that he preached to his community and to other people across the region.

In the Western World

In the western world, such as Europe and North America, Islam isn’t the prominent religion, so celebrating Rabi al-Awwal needs a slightly different touch compared to other regions around the world.

In the western world, the way that people celebrate this month is by providing talks in various locations, such as mosques, conference halls, and other important buildings. This is great for spreading the word and showing people how Muhammad shared his thoughts, stories, and ideologies around the world.

The Prophet emphasised the importance of helping others and guiding them to a happier, kinder state of being, whether that be through charity work or helping out others when they needed help.
